The News
On 8th November 2012 for some reason both my parents dropped me to school. As much as I loved the fact that they both came to drop me off it all seemed a little strange, especially as it was a Thursday and not a Monday or Friday. Usually Papa drops me off unless if he isn’t well due to hayfever or cold etc then my Mummy will drop me off.
I had a great day at school, the usual happened, I learnt phonics, played with my friends, had a lovely big lunch, played some more but outdoors this time and then we carried out tasks and handwriting skills. Finally we tidied up and were ready to go home.
Unusually both my parents collected me from school and we went out for a meal. Again very unusual for midweek let along for my parents to eat out. After the deserts had been served and devoured my parents showed me a piece of paper which I could just make out as black and white patches. It wasn’t until my Papa pointed out that the image on the paper was the scan of a baby, a baby that was in my mummies tummy.
I was really excited as the news was slowly breaking to me and I slowly understood that I was going to be a big sister soon at which point I asked my parents if it was going to be a boy or a girl. If it was a girl then I could share my clothes and all of my toys and if it was a boy then I could look after him and he could play with some of my toys which Papa says ‘these are for both boys and girls, girls should be allowed to play with Iron Man and Hulk’.
The very next day I couldn’t keep the news to myself and I told everyone at school who then in turn congratulated me and then my parents when they met them.
Over the next few months I saw my mummy's stomach get a little bigger as the baby was growing inside her. I was lucky enough to visit the hospital with them one day and I was allowed to go into the room where they can see the baby.
The doctor first of all put some gel on my mummy's stomach and then used a device to scan for the baby. I was amazed that I could see the baby on a screen and I could the heart beat. It was beating really fast and the baby was moving around a lot.
Life was busy with going to birthday parties, doing homework with my parents and going to museums, opening Christmas presents, playing in the snow in January 2014, going to more parties and visiting farms but I always made time to give the baby bump a hug and a kiss. I read the baby stories sometimes and I would also sing to it.
At first I really wanted a baby sister so that we could play with all the toys and share all the clothes together but as time went by I realised that I would like a brother and started telling my mummy ‘Mummy can I please have a baby brother so I can look after him and we can buy him some new clothes but he can play with all of my toys., please please please.’ Mummy used to say the same thing time and again ‘At this point Maya we don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl, we will only find out when the baby is born. If you really want a brother then you can ask GOD and you might just get one’. My papa only every said ‘it doesn’t matter if it’s a boy or a girl, I’m sure you will help looking after them and be the best big sister’.
In April 2013 my mum stopped going to work because she said she was on Maternity (not sure what that was but it sounded important). Mummy was getting bigger and bigger and she was finding it difficult to walk on some days as her back was hurting. I stayed at my grandparents place for some of the half term until my mum felt a little better.
On 21st April 2014 we went to watch my Papa’s older brother (Lalji Varsani aka Mota Papa) run in the Marathon. It wasn’t a very warm day and I was feeling cold unless if I was playing and running, Lavina (ben) also joined us on this day.
As the baby was getting bigger and bigger my mummy’s bump was getter bigger and bigger and she wasn’t able to drive. Papa said it will soon be time for the baby to come and both my parents started preparing a few things like the baby cot, the clothes and other items the baby would need like bottles etc.
