A Day with my Papa

30th June 2013 –

Today I spend the day with my Papa.  We all woke up a little late as we had been to Dillons party yesterday and Papa got home from work at 1am on Sunday.  I know this because when my Papa got home he came to my room and moved me so that I was sleeping properly and then he tucked me in.  In my sleep I asked him what time it was and he said it’s ‘one o’clock in the morning’.  Now I don’t remember this but my Papa told me that I asked if it was a school day and if I was allowed to wear the summer dress, to this he obviously answered ‘No, it’s Sunday when you will wake up’.

I think my Papa always comes in to see me when he has been working late because I know that I’m tucked in properly.  Mummy told me that I sleep in loads of funny positions and that a couple of times when I was three years old I kept falling out of bed because I kept moving around throughout the night.  Maybe I was dreaming of flying or just pretending jumping or something.

Anyways, let’s get back to the day.  So we all woke up late and Papa wasn’t feeling too well because he suffered from Hayfever and his back was hurting.  We were all meant to go to my Nani’s house to help make Penda’s (an Indian sweet), but Mummy said that I had to do my homework and there would be too many distraction so both my Papa and I stayed home.  We had nice breakfast and Papa allowing me to have tea and biscuits on the weekends sometimes.

No sooner had I finished breakfast Papa said I had to get straight into work mode.  Lucky for me Papa loved doing homework with me and today was especially great because my homework was to make a ‘3D Safari Animal’.  I had chosen to make a giraffe so my Papa had saved a few items from recycling bits and below is a list of items we used to make the giraffe.

1)      One inner tube of wrapping paper
2)      A tube that holds posters etc
3)      An empty baby food container
4)      Newspaper
5)      Empty fizzy drinks bottle
6)      PVA Glue and brushes
7)      Some card from a cardboard box
8)      Two lids from biro pens
9)      Elephant Tape (hope no elephants were harmed in the making of these)
10)   Dry beans
11)   Paint

We were now ready to make it all.  Papa helped me to cut the holes in the food container so that we can fit the legs, neck and tail to it, he mostly put together the base structure while I cut up the newspaper for the papier-mâché .

I then used the glue and newspaper and started sticking, Papa helped me where he would see that I was missing bits out but he sat on my bed most of the time as his looked like he was in a lot of pain every time he moved.  After the structure was covered it was time to let it dry.  While it was drying I asked Papa if I could watch some TV, unwillingly he said yes and I sat down to watch some cartoons after washing my hands.  Papa went and lay down on his bed for a little while, he must have been in a really bad way because I don’t ever remember him sleeping during the day especially when we get to spend time together.

An hour or so later Papa must have woken up as I heard the hair dryer start up.  I went up to investigate and saw.  my Papa sitting on my bed and point the hair dryer at the giraffe model and twisting it around whilst he looked half asleep.  Papa had already mixed some paint and as soon as he had finished drying the model I started to paint it.

‘It’s looks like it’s going to be hot outside, shall we take the giraffe out to dry’ my Papa said with a smile.

‘Yay, can I play in the garden while its drying’, I said in joy.

Papa responded as he does to majority of my requests ‘Yes sweetie, of course.’

While the giraffe model was drying in the sun I firstly helped Papa to put out the clothes that he had set to wash earlier in the washing machine, I handed him the clothes pegs and sometimes he asked me to hand him the clothes as he couldn’t bend down.  He then let me play with bubbles and let me run around the garden pretending to chase butterflies.

Papa was sorting out lunch and washing up dishes from the morning.  I had cheese sandwich with crisps in the middle and some extra on the side.  I cheekily asked for more crisps but Papa only gave me a few more and said that I could have some chocolate instead as I had been good.

After lunch we went back out to check if the paint on the giraffe had dried.  Papa said that we should put an additional layer on it and then sit and watch a movie while we waited for it to dry.

The thought of watching a movie made me want to paint the giraffe as fast as I could.  ‘Finished’ I said in a matter of minutes, Papa gave me that look he does to say ‘Are you sure, because it clearly isn’t’,  his one eyebrow raised, lips twisted to one side and a low hum that started from deep in the back of his throat and when released it uttered ‘Reeallly?’  I looked back at the model and knew that I hadn’t done the under part of the giraffe and said ‘Yes, let’s go watch a movie. Papa stopped me in my tracks and helped me finish off the painting; it was now time for it to dry again.

Papa allowed me to choose a movie and I choose ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’, whilst watching the movie Papa disappeared to the kitchen for a few minutes only to emerge with a bowl of popcorn.  ‘Popcorn, Yay yay yippidie yay’, I love having popcorn when watching a movie, it makes me feel like I’m at the cinema.

After the movie ended I helped Papa to collect the clothes and put them away by this time Mummy and Khaylen arrived back. She must have timed it well I thought to myself.  The giraffe was collected a little later just before I went to bed.  As I wasn’t feeling too hungry I didn’t want a full dinner so I had two Weetabix with milk instead.  I then went to sleep as I had to wake up early for school the next day.

I had a great day with my Papa, I wish he could spend more time with him over the next few days so we can finish off the Giraffe.  All that was left to do was add some ears, those little horn things they have and draw eyes, nose and mouth.

We added the above details the day before (2nd July 2013)  we had to take it into school.  It was a very quick thing to do so we did it before bed time.

The next day I took the Giraffe model into school and my Papa come to drop me off.  I told everyone that the giraffe was a girl and that it was a big sister giraffe.  I think my teachers like it very much because they kept saying how lovely and cute it looked especially as I made most of it myself with a tiny help from my Papa.
